Who Are Ya?

Each week, one of our contributors will recommend an artist/band they think deserves to be brought to your attention. No record labels, PR companies, bands or bands management will ever have made these recommendations; it is simply one music fan putting their taste on the line in the hope of sharing good music.

So without further ado, let’s crack on with this week’s introduction, in which CityLifer Simon Poole recommends Mushi Mushi for your audible delectation.

mushi mushiWho are ya?

Mushi Mushi, four diversely-different musicians finding some common ground while trying like fuck not to compromise and hopefully producing some worthwhile music that appeals to everyone involved.

Where are you from?

Individually we’re from Durham, Cornwall, Whitehaven and Hove. Collectively we’re based in Newcastle.

How long have you been doing what you’re doing now?

For around a decade on and off.

Is being a musician your full time job? If not, what is?

Vocationally speaking Mushi Mushi consists of a community musician, a vocal coach, a film maker and a research scientist.

How would you explain your sound to someone’s 90 year old grandmother?

We sound like a psychotic Vera Lynn and a badly tuned crystal set radio having a fight with a drummer during an air raid.

Are there any obvious influences in your music?

We’re the missing link between Devo and DFA 1979, between Fugazi and The Chemical Brothers, between Faith No More and LCD Soundsystem.

Are there any not so obvious influences in your music?

We’re the missing link between Slayer and Julie Andrews

Best place for people to find out what you are up to?

Anything to declare?

We released our new/debut/last/the best of/maybe only/compilation album “Sequins Save Lives” last year on the brilliant Distraction Records label.
