Who Are Ya?

NOW PLAYING: Chet Beaverbrooke by From The Kites Of San Quentin

Each week, one of our contributors will recommend an artist/band they think deserves to be brought to your attention. No record labels, PR companies, bands or bands management will ever have made these recommendations; it is simply one music fan putting their taste on the line in the hope of sharing good music.

So without further ado, let’s crack on with this week’s introduction, in which CityLifer Simon Poole recommends From the Kites of San Quentin for your audible delectation.

Who are ya?

From the Kites of San Quentin AKA your fave new band!

Where are you from?

Manchester!

How long have you been doing what you’re doing now?

Coming up to 2 years now, although we have all been in various Manc bands for years, with some mild success.

Is being a musician your full time job? If not, what is?

We wish it was, but we all work shitty office jobs full time.

How would you explain your sound to someone’s 90 year old grandmother?

Depends if that Grandmother has her wrinkly old finger on the pulse of “forward thinking electronic music with warped female vocals and live guitars that don’t really sound like guitars” or not?

Are there any obvious influences in your music?

I don’t think so, all our songs a very different from each other. A lot of people compare us (quite lazily) to Portishead, because we have a female vocalist.

Are there any not so obvious influences in your music?

You probably couldn’t pick up the fact that we dig Rush, Yes, Camel and a whole host of Prog Rock, but it’s there…DIG DEEP!

Apart from yourselves of course, what band/artist would you recommend our readers check out?

Go check out Manchester mutant genre producer Illum Sphere, and the twin Sax attack of Sheffield’s King Capisce.

Best place for people to find out what you are up to?

No way mate! I don’t give a shit if it’s not in the EU, you’re not having my 1000 cigs and 4 litres of Dark Rum!
