High Voltage’s 7th Birthday – Competition

New nights come and go with startling frequency in Manchester, but High Voltage is a much-loved landmark on the city’s musical map, and it celebrates it’s 7th anniversary over the Easter weekend with a birthday bash at the Islington Mill.

It all kicked off at the sadly lost student hangout, Karumba (or G.R.O.T. Bar to the wrinklies out there), whose Chris Evans lookalike landlord, Steve, gladly accommodated the barrage of noisy indie bands the HV gang brought to a venue previously unused to holding live music.

Before the renovators forced them out of their youth club-esque home a couple of years later, High Voltage had started an eminently readable fanzine and their own record label, which over the years put out a quality line-up of releases by the likes of The KBC, Bureau, The Answering Machine, redcarsgofaster and The Maple State.

Did we mention that they also put the Arctic Monkeys on at the Night & Day, as well as shows by The Maccabess, !!!, Simian Mobile Disco and Mystery Jets to name but a few? No? Well, we just have, so there.

Although they’ve been relatively quiet for a couple of years, the HV shindig on April 4th promises to be an absolute belter. Doors open at 5pm, and will feature sets from nine bands over two rooms, including Young British Artists, Help Stamp Out Loneliness, Sophie’s Pigeon and “The Heartbreaks – they’re the best band in Manchester!” (copyright David Sue). DJ’s aplenty, too.

Now, here at CityLifers, we’re proud as punch to give one lucky CityLifers reader the opportunity to grab a pair of free tickets to the event, and for your chance to win, all you need to do is answer this comically easy question:

Which of the following are units of energy?

a) Joules

b) Boules

c) I Pity The Crazy Fools

Send your answer, along with your name and address (so we know where send your prize if you win) to info@citylifers.co.uk, with ‘High Voltage Competition’ in the subject line. All entries to be in by noon on Friday April 2nd. One entry per person, and don’t worry, we wouldn’t dare share your details or use them for any purpose other than this comp.
