First Aid Kit – I Met Up With The King

Release Date 08/03/2010 (Wichita)

By Chris Gilliver

First Aid Kit state on their Myspace page, “We aim for the hearts, not the charts”. A hackneyed statement definitely, but judging by the strength of this single their aim is true.

This is unlikely to trouble the charts – though folk does seem to be going through something of a renaissance. And I doubt very much that they would complain about chart success. Such an attitude is as po-faced as it is disingenuous.

Yet I Met up with the King will trouble your heart; it will make it bounce and palpitate with the same force of twenty espressos, and will make you feel similarly elated and melancholic.

The song is disarmingly simple. The acoustic guitars are standard, but the vocals, from these Swedish sisters, are so direct and clear, their delivery so focused and impassioned, that you can’t help but be moved. It makes my head stare at the stereo as if I’m looking to see the compartment where the magic is stored.
